Six Afterlives

These six poems are thought experiments about eternal life and progression. The poems consider the afterlives of the famous figures Ernest Hemingway, Dale Carnegie, Edgar Allan Poe, Jonathan Edwards, Christopher Columbus, Harry Houdini, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In writing these poems, author Scott Hales imagined what eternal life might be like for famous people, particularly the “dead white men” who have long been overrepresented as key players in our historical narratives. How would they adapt to spirit prison or paradise? What would they do differently? What would existence be like for them without the privilege they enjoyed in mortality? Would they find redemption, or would they cling to their old ways? Their personalities ring through these poems.
