The Teachings of Church Leaders Regarding the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ: 1852–2018
In light of our recent Easter celebration, we are featuring the article, “The Teachings of Church Leaders Regarding the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ: 1852-2018,” from our new journal 59:1. Below is the introduction to the article.
Many Mormon studies scholars, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and observers of the Church have the impression that Latter-day Saints place greater emphasis on the Garden of Gethsemane than the cross of Calvary as the location where the Atonement of Jesus Christ primarily took place. The authors of this article present an analysis of statements by Church leaders about the Crucifixion, demonstrating that it is actually the cross and not the garden where the greatest emphasis has been placed. The authors also examine how references to the Crucifixion and the events in Gethsemane have shifted emphasis over the decades.
