Louie B. Felt, whose name is unfamiliar today, was the first general president of the Primary Association, beginning in 1880 at the age of thirty. Under the tutelage of Eliza R. Snow, she overcame her shyness to become a beloved leader of children. Her innovations for the fledgling association included hosting leadership and teacher training conferences, separating children into classes by age, involving Primary in humanitarian causes, and, against the advice and wisdom of almost everyone, founding the Children’s Friend magazine. Despite poor health for most of her life, she served as president for 45 years
